Perfection and Magic

In an interview, Anatoliy Kalugin aka. Waatson-Kalugin asked why he prefer art nudes rather than landscapes, he said: “In fact, a lot of things are interesting, I like still life very much, I have a dream to try this genre. But landscape is boring for me now. For 20 years, I had been painting almost exclusively landscapes. (…) I've always been aspired to the genre Nude. Note, that the wide popularity and especially attractive properties come to the works of this particular genre, because the perfection of the human body and the magic of feminine charm own minds of humanity. Probably operated by a subconscious desire, almost an instinct, as Freud libido. Look at art photo sites: attendance section "Nude" ten, fifteen times exceeds the attendance of the section "Landscape". And people are not looking for porn, but for beauty.”

In Anatoliy Kalugin opinion, the era of painting almost ended in the XXI century. And the era of photography began. Considering his self more a painter than a photographer, he graduated from Moscow Architectural Institute, but he preferred to start painting and worked as a technician helping to exhibit art works to the Arts Council for over nine years. Speaking about his work he said:
“One reason for the low quality of the art product lies in the insufficient sketching. For example, Vrubel made for the "Demon" hundred of oil sketches. Today, most likely, no one no longer works in this way. Usually sufferingstarts when main picture is in progress, and fading comes after that. So I did almost every time. Then I decided to try sketching using my computer. Thus, each my “ala-picture” is actually a sketch for the painting, or a variation on the pictorial or graphic subject. Using the technology to select color, change color, distort, vary the composition was very easy and pleasant. When I created first pictures, I thought, why not to publish them on photo sites to see a feedback? And suddenly it turned as, not to say a success, just a warm reception. This naive move proved to be a relative innovation: painting  almost Surikov, almost classical in the photos. Art education has significant benefits in the processing of images. Techniques in Photoshop and Corel Painter are easily mastered not only by artists. But for the professional result stuffed arm and good eye are needed. We often observe that some works are of great photographic technique, but they are made with insufficient understanding of the nature of visual art. That is why basic skills in painting and understanding of the categories it operates are the most important requirements for an art photographer.”
