Hotride on the Darkside with Thomas Illhardt

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Born at Berlin (Germany) on 27th August 1962, Thomas Illhardt got his first camera, a single-lens reflex Rolleiflex SL 35 E camera at his 18 birthday in 1980.
Photography become a way of express his self and be creative. Now he works with a Fuji Finepix S5 with various lenses and the images are processed on a computer with Photoshop.
Illhardt considered that photography is a popular hobby, a craft, a profession for many. It serves as a tool of science and is itself a science. Whether it is an art, it's a question of creativity.
Photography is like jazz and  Thomas Illhardt love them both. As he loves beauty and capture it different forms, shapes and manifestations with his camera.

I had the opportunity to have a "small talk" with Thomas Illhardt through "the wire" (actually by e-mail), a kind of quick five Q & A.

Brushvox: - How did you become a photographer and why especially nudes?
Thomas Illhardt: - I am no painter, I am no musician, therefore I use my talents in photography. And the most beautiful things in the world are women. For me it`s very interesting to observe the development before my camera.
Brushvox: - The digital era make out of anybody a possible photographer, what do you think it's the most important thing about photography: the hardware, the technique, the idea/creativity or a little bit of all?
Thomas Illhardt: - Sure a little bit of all, but for me the idea is to be creative. Not only during the photo-shooting, also the after-work-flow on the computer is a part of developing of a good picture.
Brushvox: - While photography is considered a form of art, still nudes, even labeled as "fine art nudes" are not always accepted as a form of art. It is possible to drew a clear line between art and pornography, or let's put this else how,  pornography may be also a form of art?
Thomas Illhardt: - For me  pornography is a form of art. The question have to be, what is pornography? Is a nude woman might be considered pornography? My horizon is very open and I love to get a lot of experiences.
Brushvox: - Your works are might considered by many quite explicit and vivid, how do you choose your subjects? (Eventually, you chose a subject for a particular model or seeing a model inspire you for a particular theme or subject?)
Thomas Illhardt: - Yes, I am inspired by every new model and any situations. I always work very spontaneously.
Brushvox: - I propose a kind of little game, I call it "dictionary". I will tell you five words and tell me what you think of each one of them:
skin - erotic!
shadow - more shadow then light in my pictures
lust - the most important factor in my work
guilt - I don`t think about this word!
freedom - YES! in my mind, in my work!

Thank you very much! It's been a pleasure! It was very difficult to select only a few photos from your work, definitively I will return and make some further posts in the future.
Your work is quite gloomy, but full of life and kind of glowing in the dark. And I believe darkness is naturally part of the human soul and it must be expressed as any other human feeling, we don't have to be ashamed of our thoughts, desires and experiments - both in art and life.

Thomas Illhardt managed to merge Gothic elegance with vivid glamour, concentrated eroticism with carefully selected location, the subtle settlement of the shooting stage and exciting play of colors and shadows and lights.

Beautiful works!
